ITU Dr. Erol Üçer Center for Advanced Studies in Music (ITU MIAM) is celebrating its 25th anniversary.
Founded in 1999, ITU MIAM will commemorate its 25th year with a series of events held from December 9–11, 2024, at the Maçka Armory, located on the ITU Maçka Campus, home to MIAM.
The 25th-anniversary events will begin on the evening of Monday, December 9, 2024, with a gala concert by the MIAM Modern Music Ensemble, conducted by Prof. Dr. Kamran İnce who is among the founders of MIAM. The concert will feature the world premiere of "Ve" by İnce, written for this special occasion.
On the same day at 5:00 PM, the exhibition "Kimya" will open at the MIAM Gallery, showcasing works by students, alumni, and faculty selected through an open call. Curated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cevdet Erek, the exhibition conceptually references the historical function of the space as a laboratory during its time as part of the Faculty of Mines. The exhibition will be open to visitors on December 10 and 11, from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
On Tuesday, December 10, panels will be held at the Cevad Memduh Altar Hall from 10:00 AM to 6:30 PM, discussing various artistic and academic contributions from MIAM’s 25-year history. Following the panels, the MIAM Modern Music Ensemble will perform works by MIAM faculty, alumni, and students selected through an open call. The concert will begin at 8:00 PM in the Mustafa Kemal Hall.
On Wednesday, December 11, panels will be held in the fields of sonic arts, and sound engineering and design. These discussions will take place in the MIAM Library, MIAM Recording Studio, and MIAM Gallery, exploring current studies and methodologies.
The 25th-anniversary events will conclude with a performance at the MIAM Gallery. Designed by Dr. Sair Sinan Kestelli and PhD student Serkan Sevilgen, and featuring the participation of MIAM students, the performance will utilize a networked music system inspired by Iannis Xenakis's stochastic sound synthesis algorithm, "GENDYN". Following the performance, the networked music system will be available for audience interaction, culminating in an improvisational music session with willing participants.
The three-day "MIAM’s 25th Year: Sound, Space, Memory" events, generously supported by the ITU Development Foundation, are open to the public and free of charge.
